Glee Season 1 Episode 15 Review
So this episode was a tribute to Madonna. Every song was a Madonna number. Not really my thing but for the sake of the show, I press on…
The show opens with Sue Sylvester writing into her diary about her love for Madonna, then she proceeds to coerce the principal into blasting Madonna through the PA system for the entire day. When he refuses she reminds him of her pictures and once again threatens to blackmail him unless he does this. He gives in.
In her quest to pay tribute to Madonna, Coach Sylvester gives the cheerios bracelets with W.W.M.D. (What Would Madonna Do) on them and tells them that they need to date young men, think and act like her.
Later on while the girls of Glee are hanging out in the practice room, Rachel asks them about dating. She poses a hypothetical question about ‘what if she was making out with a guy and he suggests that they ‘do it’ with her, how does she say no without being awkward about it? She just wants to be ready when it happens and doesn’t want him to be mad when she’s not ready. They then begin dishing dirt on their boyfriends or lack thereof. Mr Schuester overhears the conversation and suggests that they talk to someone about it. someone like Ms Pillsbury. *Yeah that was no help. When Rachel went to her before about sex she suggested she talk to her Rabbi* He decides to talk to her so that next time a girl approaches her about sex then she’ll be prepared. They decide to work together to come up with a plan to help the girls feel empowered and help her as well.
At Cheerios practice… As the Cheerios run through a rehearsal of “Ray of Light “Mr. Schuester walks in to talk with Coach Sylvester. He sees how inspiring the song is and then how degrading Sue is to the excellent performance. He tells her how much he is impressed with the routine.
Back at Glee practice… After seeing the Cheerios’ performance he tells them that the task for this week is to come up with a Madonna number. All the girls are ecstatic about it! The guys? Well not that much… He feels that the guys are bullying, disrespecting and being misogynistic towards the women. He tells the guys to put themselves in the girls’ shoes and that Madonna’s music is about equality and such. While the guys aren’t fully on board the ladies, led by Rachel, decide to win them over by performing “Express yourself“. Let’s just say the guys weren’t too entertained and seemed rather bored.
The next day… The Cheerio Spies are talking in the hall and realize that the only way they can stay on the Cheerios is to find a younger inferior man. Santana decides to pick Finn and the only way she can get him to fall for her is to de-virginize *yes I made that word up* him. She sees him in the hall and asks him out on a date then explains that she is going to take his virginity. When he says that he wants Rachel, she tells him that Rachel’s still with Jesse St. James. They make a date to have sex.
In Ms. Pillsbury’s office… She invites Coach Sylvester down to see her because she wants to know why Madonna isn’t playing in her office. Coach Sylvester put it to her squarely, she doesn’t feel that Ms. Pillsbury is Madonna worthy. Nothing about her exudes the self confidence, power over her body or sexual magnetism that Madonna possesses. Then she walks out like nothing happened.
In the practice room… Finn approaches Rachel about what Santana told him. Rachel wants them to do a mash-up of Madonna songs to show the guys how cool it is. Before they sing the mash-up of “Borderline” and “Open Your Heart” he asks her and she lies and says no. When he says he never thought she’d lie to him she confesses. She also makes him promise not to tell the guys.
Later on… Kurt and Mercedes are at her locker when Mr Schuester walks up. The begin talking about how amazing it is to be doing a video for the Madonna assignment. All is well until Coach Sylvester comes up to pick on Will and complain about the Glee club paying tribute. She does not want them to do it. This time while she cracks jokes about Will’s hair he quips back asking her how the Florence Henderson look is going? *Zing* Embarrassed by this, she flies off into a rage pushing any and everyone she can out of her way as she stomps down the hall. *I think she finally knows how he feels when she picks on him all the time.* Down the hall, Finn decides to take Satana up on the de-virgining.
Mercedes and Kurt feel back about what they witnessed and decide to go to Coach Sylvester’s office to see if she’s okay. She shares a story with them of how when she was six, the album True Blue came out and so she and her handy capable sister decided to bleach her hair with whatever chemicals they could find about the house. Well, of course this damaged her hair *and her brain too if you asked me* forcing her to have to wear it short for the rest of her life. That is why she picks on Will’s hair so much, because she is jealous. they decide to help her with her self esteem by including her and the Cheerios in their video tribute to Madonna.
At the Music store… Rachel meets up with Jesse. He says he feels bad about what happened the other night and tells her that she deserves epic romance and is willing to wait until she is ready to have sex. Overwhelmed, she tells him that she’s ready.
Back at school… As Will is leaving Emma stops him to let him know that all this Madonna has her thinking about her own empowerment issues and that she’s ready to do ‘the nasty’ with him tonight. Oh, and foreplay will begin at 7:30 sharp. He agrees and they make plans for 7:30.
Mercedes, Kurt and Coach Sylvester, with Artie as the director, make their own version of “Vogue”. * Utter hilarity!!!* You just have to see it to believe me on how funny this is!! Click Here!!
Later that night… They intertwine scenes of Will with Emma, Santana with Finn, and Rachel with Jesse as they each sing “Like a Virgin” before taking the other’s virginity, or at least trying to.
On Monday… Kurt and Mercedes are at his locker talking about how great they did on the video and how they ma have changed Coach Sylvester only for her to walk by her looking the same as usual. Mean and grumpy. When they ask her what happened she tells them that she grew tired of reinventing herself. The real reason was that when she went to the principal’s office with her new look to give him a list of kids, *all Glee clubbers*, to be sent to New York with $35 in their pocket *That’s how Madonna started out* he explained to her that she didn’t need to try and look like someone else and that she was an original just like Madonna. She decided that instead of reinventing herself she’ll just reinvent everyone else starting with Mercedes and Kurt.
In the Practice room… Finn catches up with Rachel to see how things went with her date with Jesse. She fronts and says that things went fine, but hints that he may not have ‘measured up” to her expectations. truth is, she couldn’t go through with it because she felt like she would be betraying the others and sleeping with the enemy. She then turns the questions to his date with Santana. He lies and says he couldn’t go through with it because he’s waiting for the right person( e.g. her). Actually he did go through with it but didn’t feel anything because he didn’t feel anything for Santana *who’s a bit of a lil hoe if you ask me*.
At Will’s Office… Emma knocks on the door. When he asks where she was because he had been trying to call her all weekend she apologizes for not going through with it and having sex with him. She thanks him for being a gentleman about it, he stops her and tells her that she doesn’t need to apologize and already took the first step by just mentioning that they do anything. They decide on a no date policy until his divorce is final. When asked when it would be he tells her that he filed today and while they are waiting he suggests she get help for her problem and suggests a counselor that can meet her at her office. When Emma walks out, the bomb walks in. Jesse St. James comes in to talk to him. He has officially transferred to Mckinley!!!
At Glee practice… Mr. Schuester and Jesse tell the others of what just transpired. Of course they are totally pissed and feel like it’s a trap and he’s only there to spy. He makes up this story of how his parents are on winter vacation in Bali so he’ll be staying with his uncle *who just happens to live in Mckinley’s school district*. When Rachel asks him why he’s doing this he tells her that since she would never be with him completely because he was a rival, now that they are on the same team then nothing is in the way of their love and he cares about her more than winning another national title.
Later at the pep rally…As the Cheerios perform their routine of “Four Minutes” there are two new vocalists in the group, Mercedes and Kurt!! Mr. Schuester is visibly pissed!! After the great performance he approaches Coach Sylveste, Mercedes and Kurt about it and thinks they should have at least given him a heads up *kinda like how he does when he almost gives them the solo every week*.
Back at practice… The guys sing “What it feels like for a girl” They then realize how they have treated the other girls badly and decide to do something to make it up to them. Artie apologizes to Tina and tells her that he really does care about and like her. Finn goes to tell Rachel how he really feels only to be stopped when Jesse walks up and says they need to have a sing off after school over Rachel. *dude, seriously? A sing off? WTH?* Finn decides to be the bigger man and instead of battling he welcomes Jesse into the group and offers to teach him the song that the guys will be doing for the assignment.
The show ends with the group doing a performance of “Like A Prayer“
